Pleistocene glacial variability as a chaotic response to obliquity forcing

چکیده

The mid-Pleistocene Transition from 40 ky to ∼100 ky glacial cycles is generally characterized as a singular transition attributable to scouring of continental regolith or a long-term decrease in atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Here an alternative hypothesis is suggested, that Pleistocene glacial variability is chaotic and that transitions from 40 ky to ∼100 ky modes of variability occur spontaneously. This alternate view is consistent with the presence of∼80 ky glacial cycles during the early Pleistocene and the lack of evidence for a change in climate forcing during the mid-Pleistocene. A simple model illustrates this chaotic scenario. When forced at a 40 ky period the model chaotically transitions between small 40 ky glacial cycles and larger 80 and 120 ky cycles which, on average, give the ∼100 ky variability.

Integrated summer insolation forcing and 40,000-year glacial cycles: The perspective from an ice-sheet/energy-balance model

[1] Although the origins of the 40,000-year glacial cycles during the early Pleistocene are readily attributed to changes in Earth’s obliquity (also having a 40,000-year period), the lack of ice-volume variability at precession periods (20,000 years) is difficult to reconcile with most parameterizations of the insolation forcing. It was recently proposed that precession’s influence on glaciatio...

Are the 41 kyr glacial oscillations a linear response to Milankovitch forcing?

The characteristics of glacial oscillations changed drastically 0:8Ma ago, at the ‘‘mid-Pleistocene transition’’. During the past 0.8Ma the 100kyr glacial–interglacial oscillations were strongly asymmetric (i.e., long glacial intervals of growth followed by rapid intervals of deglaciation). The 40 kyr oscillations prior to the mid-Pleistocene transition were of a smaller amplitude and lessasymm...

Glacial variability over the last two million years: an extended depth-derived agemodel, continuous obliquity pacing, and the Pleistocene progression

An agemodel not relying upon orbital assumptions is estimated over the last 2Ma using depth in marine sediment cores as a proxy for time. Agemodel uncertainty averages 10Ka in the early Pleistocene ( 2–1Ma) and 7Ka in the late Pleistocene ( 1Ma to the present). Twelve benthic and five planktic d O records are pinned to the agemodel and averaged together to provide a record of glacial variabilit...

Plio–Pleistocene climate evolution: trends and transitions in glacial cycle dynamics

We describe the evolution of climate system dynamics by examining the climate response to changes in obliquity and precession over the last 5.3Myr. In particular, we examine changes in the shape of glacial cycles and the power of obliquity and precession response in benthic dO. When the exponential trend in dO variance is removed, its spectral power exhibits strong, proportional responses to am...

An early Pleistocene Mg/Ca-δ18O record from the Gulf of Mexico: Evaluating ice sheet size and pacing in the 41-kyr world

Early Pleistocene glacial cycles in marine δO exhibit strong obliquity pacing, but there is a perplexing lack of precession variability despite its important influence on summer insolation intensity – the presumed forcing of ice sheet growth and decay according to the Milankovitch hypothesis. This puzzle has been explained in two ways: Northern Hemisphere ice sheets instead respond to insolatio...
